New Policies That Google and Yahoo Are Implementing On February 1st

Have you heard about the new policies that Google and Yahoo are implementing on February 1st?

If you use email marketing in your business to send bulk email to a list of subscribers, there

a few vital actions you need to take before the deadline. Back in October, Google announced these new policies in an effort to reduce the amount to spam that lands in Gmail inboxes. At the same time, these policies could block your marketing messages from getting to your subscribers, even if they’ve given you permission to email them!


Here’s what you need to do to prevent your emails from being blocked….


1. Authenticate your Domain and update your DNS records It’s possible for people to spoof your email

address and pretend they are you, which can wreak havoc on your email reputation. Basically, you need to prove that you are you when sending emails by verifying your domain name and updating the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records of your domain. If not, even your legit messages could start getting blocked.


2. Allow 1-Click Unsubscribe

You need to make it easy for people to unsubscribe without having to jump through hoops. That means that if you’ve been burying the unsubscribe link in your emails or have been sending bulk email without one, it’s time to change that.


3. Keep Your Spam Rate Below .03%

That means for every 1,000 emails you send, if more than 3 people flag your message as spam, you’ve already passed that threshold. Ouch! I’m willing to bet that’s not even something you check on a regular basis. If you're sending more than 5,000 emails a day, you’ll be required to fix all this (and many of these steps are required no matter how big your list is or how many emails you send!).
