I went through a weight loss journey. Doctors gave me steroids, I put on 50 lbs; I was already 10 lbs overweight. Needed to lose 60 lbs. It was very hard, I am still on that journey; but happy to say that I already lost 40 lbs and losing remaining 20 lbs as we speak. Sharing what worked for me. Sharing what mindset I had to change and also what help I took, from our mentorship team, my nutritionist friend and some amazing products.

Thinking of mindset:

Real / Physical hunger

This is when your stomach is empty and your brain signals that it is hungry by initiating stomach growling, thoughts about food, and feelings of irritability, tiredness and poor concentration. When you are physically hungry, any food will satisfy you, and this is actually a good thing! Feeling your hunger cues is important and a great way to know if you are consuming adequate food or not.

Emotional / Psychological hunger

This is when we eat due to our emotions, whether it be boredom, stress, sadness or loneliness, which often leads to feelings of regret or guilt. During this time of isolation, it is more likely that you will reach for foods like ice cream, chocolate, and chips, as these make us “feel good.” Psychological hunger can lead to a binge on these particular foods, as we may ignore our fullness cues. We eat when we’re stressed and upset. We eat when we’re happy and celebrating. And sometimes (often times) we eat out of sheer boredom.

“Boredom is probably the number 1 emotional type of hunger,” says psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD. “We often ignore, avoid or negotiate our true hunger signs — including when we’re already full and just looking for something to entertain us.”

But the thing is, there’s a difference between true physical hunger and emotional hunger.

Physical hunger is gradual and tied to the last time you ate. While emotional hunger is triggered by things such as stress, worry or fatigue.

How to overcome emotional hunger? What worked for me?

I read so many articles, watched videos; they said when you are emotionally hungry, feel opposite way what made you feel hungry. If stress felt you hungry, feel relaxed. Then when I was celebrating, I needed to feel sad or what? That didn’t work for me. Also advice like watch entertaining movies etc to distract, do gardening etc. Nothing worked for me. The only thing worked for me was drinking really nice well satisfying water. I also started adding fiber powder which was totally tasteless in my water; which made me feel really full. Also, I kept on telling myself that I am totally satisfied and full.
